THE LORD IS GOOD!

August, 2008

ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE

If you’re a Baby-Boomer then you know this Beatles’ “love song” well!  If John, Paul, George, and Ringo had been singing about God’s love, there would have been truth in that song!

But God defines love much differently than we find within culture.  In fact, what is passed as love in the world (and in many churches) is in fact a deadly imitation of the real thing.

The Apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians 5:1-2 –

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

We need to realize that the command of verse 2, “…walk in love,” is impossible without first obeying verse 1.  As Christ followers, every Believer is commanded to imitate Jesus Christ.  After we are born-again, our life “is hidden with Christ in God” (Coloss. 3:3) because our old nature has died and we live a new life in union with Christ.

taught us how to live in two simple commandments about love; first we must love God with all of our heart, soul and mind; second, we must love our neighbors as ourselves (Matt. 22:36-40).  When we obey this, then love becomes that which “binds everything together in perfect harmony” (Colos. 3:14).

In context of Paul’s writing in Eph.3, our command to walk in love means that we are kind, tenderhearted and forgiving to one another (Eph. 4.29).

So what is true love and what does it mean to “walk in love”.  We find the answer in the balance of verse 2: “And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

The way Believers live is to be the way of the cross!  Our love must be sacrificial; putting the needs of others before our own.  Jesus said, 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.  (John 15:13)  The Apostle John wrote:  “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”  It is sacrificial, self-giving, merciful, patient love that marks a genuine follower of Christ!

Jesus Christ is our example in living and loving.  When we look to the cross, we see the gospel of God in Jesus’ atoning sacrifice and the propitiation for our sins (1 John 4.10).  Jesus made himself a sacrifice in order to turn away the wrath of a Holy God!  Far from dismissing or tolerating our sins, God sent His only Son to bear the penalty in His body so that we might be found righteous (imputed) in Him.  The gospel doesn’t have God looking over our sins, but He brings reconciliation to us without compromising His holiness, justice or righteousness!

The populace love of John, Paul, George and Ringo is a love that speaks of tolerance and freedom within the bonds of slavery and death!  Divine love points us to Christ who never tolerated sin but liberated us from its grip over our lives!

True love….the love of Christ, “it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.

This is the kind of love we are called to walk in.  So with the Apostle John, let us say, “We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers [and sisters] Whoever does not love abides in death

(1 John 3:14).

My prayer is that we will love God and each other sacrificially….and that we will Taste and See that God is good!

Pastor Jim

Thanks to all who are so Bread Ministryfaithful and dependable to bake their bread each week.  It is to the Lord that you are faithful.  Anyone interested in baking a loaf of any type bread, just bring it on any Sunday morning.  You don’t have to be a regular to help, or I can put you on the once a month list.  There is a bread basket in the back; you can just drop it into. So many people have told me that the loaf of bread they received has been such a blessing to them.  Thanks and God Bless.

Have a very blessed day, Deb

Text Box: AWANA
It’s that time of year again for AWANA to start back up again and in order for this program to truly be effective the church needs you. If you are not sure AWANA is a part of Gods ministry that you can serve in then be sure to join us Sunday August 10th to hear a special service on the ins and outs of AWANA and what it means to serve. But in the mean time please be in serious prayer for how God can use you. We need at least 12 leaders and helpers to run AWANA. This year we will be running the church van so we will need at least 2 van drivers to help in this area. Keep your eyes and ears open for more info to come.

Connie Harris & Sabrina White are both running a nursery program that is in need of at least ten workers. Please be one of those people who will step up and help out.

Would you like to have something posted in the church news letter? Then be sure to send in your request to Lois at Loislabs@aol.com 2 week before the first of each month.
